Ancient Egyptian Medicine

Ancient Egyptians were advanced medical practisioners and masters of the human body. They had a good understanding of anatomy and organ functions, especially due to their specialized mummification ceremonies. They used herbs as cumin, fennel, caraway, aloe, saf- flower, pomegranates, castor and others in order to prepare their treatment drugs. 

Herbs in Ancient Egypt

A plethora of herbs were mentioned in the Ebers Papyrus- one of the most important works, which has shone light onto Ancient Egyptians and their medical habits. Herbs played a crucial role in the daily lives of Egyptians. They were used to induce strength and endurance, to relive pain and discomfort and to address any other bodily issues. 

Herbs and their use in Ancient Egypt

Garlic and Onion

Egyptians consumed huge quantites of garlic and onion, as they believed it expanded strength and endurance. Raw garlic was also given routinely to asthmatics, to aid breathing probems. Onion was used for digestive issues. 

 

Coriander

Coriander was seen as a cooling agent and also a reliver of digestive problems. Both the  plant and the seeds were used as a spice in cooking to prevent bloating and gas. Coriander tea was used to aid any urinary complaints. Coriander leaves were also often added to spicy food to tone down its effect. 

 

Cumin

A herb indigenous to Egypt, the cumin seeds were used for soothing bloating. Cumin was often used together with coriander for flavoring. It was also used for the making of powder mix, together with some wheat flour, which was believed to alleviate arthritis and joint pain.  

 

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera was used for relieving chest pain and headache as well as burns and ulcers. It was also prescribed for skin diseases and allergies. 

 

Cardamom

Besides its use for food flavouring, cardamom was also used to help digestions and remove excess gas.

 

Poppy

The seeds from the opium poppy flower were used as an anesthetic. The poppy was also used to relieve insomnia and headache. 

 

Frankincense

Frankincense was used against throat and larynx infections. It prevented bleeding as well as vomiting. 

The wisdom of the herbs

Ancient Egyptians were really advanced for their time due to their understanding of the body and its functions. Their use of herbal medicine is a simpe example of the power and potency herbs hold. Knowing how to use the plethora of herbs available is a school on its own, but we hope to bring you something of use every time we share something about the eternal herbal knowledge.
